Ryuichi Sakamoto: async Live at the Park Avenue Armory

Saturday November 17th at 7:30pm

Tickets: $7

This rare live-performance film, which premiered at this year’s Berlinale Special program, captures an intimate concert by Ryuichi Sakamoto held at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City. Recorded during the production of RYUICHI SAKAMOTO: CODA, MUBI’s recent documentary about the brilliant artist’s life, achievements, and creative processes, the performance marked the public unveiling of Sakamoto’s new composition “async”, hailed as one of the best albums of 2017 by such esteemed publications as Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. Sakamoto’s transcendent performance is accompanied by video imagery by artists Shiro Takatani and Takashi Makino.

“async” is Ryuichi Sakamoto’s first solo album in eight years (not counting his 2015 Oscar-nominated score of Alejandro González Iñárritu’s THE REVENANT). Taking inspiration from everyday objects, sculpture and nature, Sakamoto composed and arranged one of his most personal albums. The composition uses piano and orchestra instrumentation, and a selection of unique acoustic and electric sounds both programmed and organic. Primarily recorded in New York City, the album plays with ideas of asynchronism, prime numbers, chaos, quantum physics and the blurred lines of life.
